Clingman's Dome, the Heart of the Smokies

This is one of my favorite pictures from the whole trip. Remember all those dead trees? This is a close up of the side of one of them. The bark is obviously all gone. I have never seen any kind of wood with a grain pattern even remotely similar to this. Very cool.

I guess you would have never suspected that I would have taken more pictures of dead trees. Well you'd be wrong! I think the contrast between the vertical trees and the slanted trees is very cool, especially since all of the slanted trees are leaning at the same angle.

This is the beginning of the trail going up from the parking lot to the lookout tower. Fortunately, we are on the downside of the trip.

I don't know why, but I get a real kick out of this picture. Imagine this, your freedom of speech does not apparently include verbal expressions if you are at this park. You have to print your expression so that it fits in this tidy little locked box. Then you have to have your expression approved so that you can get a permit. Who decides if you get a permit or not? Hmmm... I wonder if anything other than this notice has ever been displayed in this box?
